Carate, the gateway to Corcovado National Park, is at the end of the road approximately one and a half hours ride by car or 7 minutes by air charter from the town of Puerto Jimenez on the Osa Peninsula. Click here for a map of Costa Rica.

When you arrive in Carate on the far western side of the "Osa Peninsula", you are at the true frontier of this land, the wildest and most remote region on the mainland. The Natural Beauty of this area is indescribable, with verdant ridges full of monkeys and scarlet macaws. In fact, this area has the highest concentration of breeding scarlet macaws in the world!

The lavish ridges cascade down to the wide sand beach with nothing but driftwood and coconut shells on it for miles on end.

The airstrip and the road end at exactly the same spot at the Carate River. No matter how you get here the deserted sandy beaches with tall palms full of coconuts, and almond trees full of scarlet macaws, and unridden waves peeling offshore almost every day of the year, will be waiting patiently for you.

The "Peninsula de Osa" is located in the extreme south western corner of Costa Rica, directly west of "Golfito" on the "Golfo Dulce". (Map of Costa Rica) It's home to the world renowned "Corcovado National Park" which contains approximately 3/5's of the peninsula's land mass. This is the largest remaining protected tract of "Pacific Coast Rain Forest" left in the Western Hemisphere!

The wildlife here is absolutely extraordinary, the plant life more diverse than you will find anywhere in the world, and the butterflies, other insects and birds will just blow you away. There is a ridge of large hills that run down the center of the peninsula offering spectacular views not only of the wide open "Pacific Ocean", but also of the calmer "Golfo Dulce".

These hills are the sources of the many pristine rivers that flow to the "Pacific" or "Golfo Dulce" and are just loaded with giant river shrimp, known locally as langostino.

Some of the best Marlin, Sailfish and Tuna are caught within 15 miles of our shores. There are also a number of good places with consistent surf breaks.

The virgin beaches are fantastic, wild, and there's hardly ever anyone on them. And luckily, with constant fresh tropical breezes, we have very few biting insects.

The main town of the peninsula, "Puerto Jimenez" offers the infrastructure, (bank, post office, telecommunications, airport, port and bus depot) necessary to engage in vacation pastimes as well as pursuing business interests.

There are a variety of bars and restaurants which offer good value for the money, as well as an interesting night life. The peninsula has managed to maintain it's cultural integrity and individuality; while at the same time welcoming visitors graciously.
