Lookout Inn Tropical Update
Today is Sunny and it's 86 degrees with a nice ocean breeze. The sky is clear and blue and the Pacific Ocean has slow moving waves which is rare for this place. It has been absolutely beautiful here for 40 days and at least 3 more months just like this to come. No rain in the forecast, of course you really can't predict anything here anyway... We are still feeding the monkeys and the Coatis (see picture to the left) and they are visiting us almost 3 times a day. The humpback whales are slowly crawling past our Inn on their way to the Gulfo Dulce and the Whale-sharks should be arriving soon. They are 40 foot plankton eating fish that tourists swim with and try to ride, me...I like my motorcycle.
We had a great holiday season here with a pig roast on the beach and lots of guests enjoying the warm salt water, sun, pool, waterfalls and visiting Corcovado National Park. We hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season as well.
We just completed a wooden staircase (photo on the right) constructed from the third deck and climbs up the south face of our mountain. It has 227 steps joining the ridge trail that now loops to the triple waterfalls which most of you have been to. It's called The Stairway to Heaven and it's a monstrous beauty. We also have a platform deck with a great view and we'll be putting another two further up with even more fantastic views. Poison Dart frogs are abundant on the top along with the Howler Monkeys, Spider Monkeys, Toucans and the giant primary rainforest trees. The colorful and loud Scarlet Macaws are still flying around and are getting more popular...it's the courting/breeding season for them now and soon they'll be sitting on their nests.
Then around June, July & August they all get together to show off their kids.
This is a great time to visit the Lookout Inn again to see flocks from 70 to 120 Scarlet Macaws. It's amazing to watch that many Macaws in the trees and soaring through the air. It's also the beginning of the rainy season which is not all that bad. Great time to observe all the tree frogs and poison dart frogs. Last season we had 6 different species in and around our frog ponds. While talking about rain...last year we received 327.3 inches of rainfall (that's over 9 yards). The last batch that fell on us was December 7, 2003 with 17 inches of pouring rain in under 11 hours. It was wet and wild here for awhile but the Scarlet Macaws and the frogs were still out, us...we had boots and shovels in hand. There was lots of rain last year because of the end of El Nino, this season should be normal so we hope to see a lot of you back again.

Let's not forget the Sea Turtles... The National Sea Turtle Foundation next door to us collected over 26,000 turtle eggs saving them from dogs and poachers and then release the babies the night they hatch from the nursery, an absolute must to get involved in. If you have not seen a bunch of one day old baby sea turtles trying to scramble to the beach, you need to visit us again to experience this wonderful site.
